Conformance Standard (WCAG 2.2 Level AA)
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.
Elyton International School targets full conformance with WCAG 2.2 Level AA (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2, Conformance Level AA).
Our digital infrastructure is built following the four core WCAG principles:
- Perceivable: Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive (such as text alternatives for non-text content and adequate colour contrast).
- Operable: User interface components and navigation must be operable without requiring a mouse (full keyboard navigability and clear focus outlines).
- Understandable: Information and the operation of the user interface must be clear, readable, and predictable.

- Skip-to-Content Mechanism: A dedicated skip link (
#main-content) is the very first focusable element on every page, allowing keyboard and screen reader users to bypass navigation menus and jump straight to primary page content. - Semantic HTML5 Landmark Roles: Pages are structured with appropriate landmark tags (
<header>,<nav>,<main>,<article>,<section>, and<footer>) to allow screen readers to navigate hierarchically. - Strict Heading Hierarchy: Each page maintains a single

Visual Design, Typography & Contrast
In accordance with The Elyton Code (§1.2.2), our visual system uses an open-licence typographic stack optimized for legibility:
- Display Typography: Newsreader — a clarified editorial serif with high stroke contrast designed for sustained reading comfort.
- Body Typography: Instrument Sans — a geometric grotesque sans-serif with tall x-height and open apertures ensuring readability at smaller screen sizes.
- Tabular & Utility Typography: JetBrains Mono — monospaced figures used in fee schedules, date tables, and code snippets to ensure unambiguous digit distinction.
- Colour Contrast Ratios: All core body text meets or exceeds the WCAG AA minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against its background. Large headings and interactive button text meet or exceed 3:1 contrast ratios.
- Text Resizing: The site accommodates browser zoom up to 200% without loss of content, functionality, or disruptive horizontal scrolling.
Accessible Forms & Admissions Portals
Our admissions portal at /apply/, tour booking widgets, and contact forms have been engineered to ensure effortless completion for all parents:
- Explicit Form Labels: Every input, dropdown, and textarea is associated with a clear, programmatic
<label>element. - Helpful Error Identification: If a required field is omitted or incorrectly formatted, clear descriptive error text is announced and linked to the field via
aria-describedby. - Autofill Support: Form fields implement standard HTML autocomplete attributes (e.g.
name,email,tel) to reduce cognitive and physical strain during submission.
Media, Images & Downloadable Documents
We aim to make visual and downloadable assets as accessible as possible:
- Alternative Text (Alt Text):Informative images carry descriptive alt text conveying their content and context (e.g., “Elyton International School 400m all-weather athletics track on Magadi Road, Karen”). Purely decorative graphics have empty alt attributes (
alt="") so screen readers ignore them. - Downloadable Documents (PDFs): Key documents, including our Admissions Prospectus and Brand Book, are authored to maintain searchable text, structural bookmark headings, and tagged reading orders.
