The year that bridges two stages
Reception completes the Early Years Foundation Stage. Children are still learning through play, but the play now carries more of the structure Year 1 will ask for: short focused sessions on phonics and number, longer stories, and more independence in getting ready, tidying up and taking turns.
What children learn in Bloom
- Reading. Systematic phonics continues until children can blend sounds to read simple words and sentences, alongside daily stories read aloud.
- Writing. From mark-making to letters, words and first sentences.
- Number. Counting, comparing, simple adding and taking away, shape and pattern, with real objects.
- The wider world. Science-in-play, music, painting, building and role play, across all seven areas of the EYFS.
- Moving. Outdoor play on the Early Years ground every day.
Ready for Year 1
By the end of Reception, the EYFS describes the early learning goals children work towards across the seven areas. Your child's progress is reported against those expectations, so the step into Key Stage 1 is planned, not sudden.
Joining Bloom
Places are open for September 2026 and January 2027. Check your child's year group with the age finder. Admissions confirms every child's starting point after a short, relaxed "Meet your child" session.
