The two years that build fluency
Key Stage 1 is where the foundations from the Early Years become secure. By the end of Year 2, the National Curriculum expects children to read fluently, write in full sentences and work confidently with numbers to 100.
What your child learns
- English. Systematic phonics continues until decoding is automatic, then the focus moves to fluency and understanding. Children write every day: sentences first, then short pieces with a beginning, middle and end.
- Mathematics. Number, place value, addition and subtraction, then multiplication and division facts, shape and measurement, taught for fluency first and then reasoning.
- Science. Plants, animals, materials and seasons, through hands-on investigation.
- Computing. Early coding and digital literacy, supported by Cloud School.
- The wider curriculum. History, geography, art and design, music, and physical education, including swimming taught on our own campus.
How progress is reported
Your child's progress is reported against national expectations from the first term: whether they are working towards, at, or beyond the standard for their age, in each subject. That external benchmark is the point of choosing the British curriculum.
The step up from Reception
Moving from Reception to Year 1 is the biggest change in primary school: more structure, longer focus, more independence. Classes capped at twenty-five mean the teacher can notice which children need that change made gently.
Joining Key Stage 1
Places are open for September 2026 and January 2027. Bring your child's most recent school report: it is the most useful document for finding the right starting point, especially for children moving from CBC or another system. Admissions confirms every child's starting point after a short, relaxed "Meet your child" session.
