RELOCATION

Living in Karen with Children

A short guide to Nairobi's south-west suburbs for families arriving from abroad.

Karen is a green, low-density suburb in south-west Nairobi, at the foot of the Ngong Hills and near Nairobi National Park, and it is a long-standing choice for families. Elyton International School is on Magadi Road in Karen, with a school bus covering Karen, Lang'ata, Hardy and further afield.

Where Karen is

Karen lies in the south-west of Nairobi, with Lang'ata to the east and the Ngong Hills to the west. It takes its name from the author Karen Blixen, whose former home is now the Karen Blixen Museum. Nairobi National Park is a short drive away.

What families find here

  • Space and green. Larger plots and gardens than most of Nairobi.
  • Things to do with children. The Giraffe Centre in Lang'ata, the Karen Blixen Museum, Nairobi National Park, and walking in the Ngong Hills.
  • Shopping and services at Karen shopping centre, The Hub Karen and Galleria Mall.

The neighbouring areas

  • Lang'ata and Hardy: close to Karen, in Elyton's school bus Zone 1.
  • Ongata Rongai: about 5.5 km south of the school along Magadi Road, in Zone 2.
  • Kilimani and Lavington: about 10 to 13 km from the school, in Zone 2.
  • Ngong: about 15 km by road, in Zone 2.

Road distances to Elyton from each area are on the getting here page.

The school run
